Art Lesson Ideas

Goal: Students will have a mandala that represents their background.

Objectives: Students will be able to make equal measurements using a ruler.

Students will be able to use a compass to create circles that are perfectly round.

Description: The art project connects to math by use of ruler and compass to create exact measurements and circles. Students will make their own mandalas by using aspects of their backgrounds. These aspects can be colored later, but the focus will be on creating lines and circles that are equal in measurements.

Materials: Paint, Paper, Pencil, Ruler, Compass

Reflection:

Work in progress. I have not yet added watercolor paints to this mandala and I have not figured out the colors. This mandala currently represents my art progression and elements that have had an influence on my progression.

I created a border of graffiti tags with several geographic locations which reflects the importance of street art in my life. “The Boogie Down Bronx” where I was born, raised and had my first encounter with graffiti. “Trinidad & Tobago” which is where my mother is from and the source of my calm demeanor which is reflected in my art. “All Over Jamaica” which is close to Trinidad & Tobago in my heart because it is my father’s birthplace. “Planet Earth” which represents my artistry as an alien on vacation.

Within the border are representations of the art aspects that speak to my work and all around self. Patterns that are both highly calculated, sharp and seemingly cold juxtaposed against curvy, free flowing lines that evoke warmth accurately reflects both sides of me. One technical and one not so technical.

Finally, the center also represents both the serious side and the more relaxed side.

Titled “Nelson Mandala” and I wonder why?
